Central Park School for Children's After School Program (ASP) supports the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of students through age-appropriate enrichment and recreational activities. It provides a safe, fun environment that is a natural extension of our child-centered school program. Staffing includes one counselor for every fifteen students. In 2009-2010 the program served an average of 75 children.

Fun Activities

ASP students are divided into three groups based on age/grade levels. Our afternoon includes a healthy snack and a mix of outdoor and indoor creative play — dramatic play, arts and crafts, hands-on activities, Kapla blocks, sports and playground games — plus a bit of rest and quiet reading.

Exploratoriums

Guest artists come in to lead hour-long classes over a period of time. Exploratoriums are generally arts-based and are offered free of charge to students enrolled in ASP. Last year our students enjoyed Djembe Drumming with Shannon Morrow and Creative Dance with Gaspard Louis, formerly of Pilobolus Dance Theater.

After School Clubs (ASCs)

New this year! After School Clubs offer lessons in music, foreign language, drama, or extra support (tutoring) in academic subjects. ASCs provide families the convenience of extracurricular activities at CPSC after 3:15 pm. ASCs are open to all CPSC students, not just those enrolled in After School. Clubs will be offered each quarter; information will be sent home with Weekly Updates. A one-time enrollment fee of $20 is due at registration, and full payment is due one week prior to start date of the club.

Hours & Days of Operation

After School operates from school dismissal (3:15 pm) to 6 pm.

After School starts at 1:20 pm on our monthly Early Release days, and is offered at no extra charge for children who would regularly attend After School that day. Children not enrolled in ASP can attend until 4 pm or until 6 pm; see fees below.

On days when school is dismissed early due to inclement weather, there will be no After School.

To accommodate different families' needs, ASP offers flexible attendance options. We do ask that children be enrolled on a specific schedule set up in advance.

New Emergency Care Policy for 2010-2011:

  • Scheduled Guests:

Children who do not regularly attend After School can be our guests if space is available that day. The cost is $25. Arrangements must be made with Esther at least 3 school days in advance.
  • Unplanned Guests:

Children who are not picked up by 3:45 pm will be sent to After School and will be charged the $25 fee for emergency care. Each family is allowed 3 such emergencies per year. Children who are Unplanned Guests more than 3 times will have quiet reading time with the ASP Director rather than playing with their friends!  Please call if you will be delayed in picking up your child.
  • To Make Arrangements for Care:

Please contact Esther Quinn at 682-1200, ext. 228 or at 919-672-9025.
